BUZZ! Market Outlook By PhilEquity As Of August 2015 | Think Philippines!

MARKET OUTLOOK: CAUTIOUS
STRATEGY: REDUCE INDEX WEIGHTING AND  REVERT TO STOCK PICKING

China’s official PMI fell to 50 in July from 50.2 in June. The reading was also below the median estimate of 50.1. This points to a factory slowdown and a possible economic slowdown in China, which may affect global growth and global markets

The US dollar has also continued to strengthen and most other currencies, including the peso, to weaken. The peso is now trading at the 45.5 to 46 range, which is something that we have to monitor. On the political front, Interior and Local Gov’t Secretary Mar Roxas was endorsed by President Aquino last week as the administration standard bearer for the 2016 presidential elections. Markets are eagerly waiting whether Senator Grace Poe will join the fray, as her candidacy should materially affect how the presidential race will shape up. So far only Roxas and Vice President Binay have formally declared their candidacies. The uncertainty regarding next year’s elections may further contribute to the tentativeness in the market.

2Q15 earnings are also coming in, with preliminary results from some banks and power companies coming in slightly weaker than expected. More earnings results should come out this week and these will be the focus of the market. We shall monitor these results closely and trade accordingly.

We continue to maintain a cautious stance on the market in light of global volatility and local uncertainty. We continue to monitor 2Q15 earnings and how this will affect the market. We shall focus on companies that can deliver better-than-expected earnings in this type of an environment. We also have to wait for 2Q15 GDP, which comes out in August 28. Note that lower-than-expected 1Q15 GDP growth was one of the reasons why our market corected sharply from the all-time high that was seen earlier this year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is FWD?

Arriving in the Philippines in early 2014, FWD is the insurance arm of Pacific Century Group, an Asia-based private investment group established in 1993 with interests in property, financial services, telecommunications and other investments in the Asia Pacific region. FWD is the first in nearly a decade to be granted a life insurance license by the Insurance Commission of the Philippines. FWD launched its commercial operations in September 2014.

FWD’s business spans the Philippines, Hong Kong & Macau, and Thailand, with a brand presence in Indonesia, offering life insurance services that enable the continuity of our customer’s lifestyles. FWD’s focus is to leverage technology to enhance customer experience, deliver innovative products, and invest in talent to create a leading pan-Asian life insurer that changes the way people feel about insurance.

What are Variable Unit-Linked (VUL) insurance products?

VUL insurance products are life insurance products with an underlying investment component. Similar to traditional life products, these VUL products provide coverage, benefits, and sum assured in case of defined events, such as death, disability, etc., while at the same time earning the returns of money invested in Unit-Investment Trust Funds (UITFs). Part of the premium paid by the owner of the insurance covers the benefits of the policy contract while the remaining are used to purchase units of participation in the insurer’s selected UITFs.

With  FWD customers can choose to place the investment component of their VUL insurance products in 4 different funds.

FWD Peso Growth Fund FWD Peso Bond Fund FWD Peso Stable Fund FWD Peso High
Dividend Equity Fund

Are there any risks involved in purchasing VUL insurance products?

The policy coverage in itself does not entail any risk on the part of the purchaser of the VUL product. However, because the product has an underlying investment to UITFs, which are highly dependent on the performance of the market, the amounts invested are not guaranteed of returns and are at risk of loss. The VUL insurance products are not deposit products and are not covered by the Philippine Deposit Insurance Corporation.

TECH NEWS : Why UX (User Experience) Matters A Lot More! | Think Philippines!

This infographic about UX by Homestead really caught my eye. The examples given are pretty mind blowing. Thanks to great UX design, Amazon saw a $300M revenue boost each year and McAfee cut 90% on support demand. Just wow.

UX is what people experience on your site and it’s important because users remember experiences more so than functional stuff:

  • 68% of users exit a site because of poor UX
  • 44% will share with their peers if they met with poor UX
  • 62% of customer repeat their purchase if UX is great

B. C. Fill out the application documents. You will normally be asked to complete three forms: the Personal Information Sheet, the Investor Profile Questionnaire, and the Order Ticket. The forms may vary depending on the mutual fund company but they usually have forms to get your personal details (Personal Information Sheet); identify your risk tolerance and investment goal (Investor Profile Questionnaire); and determine the shares of the fund you want to purchase (Order Ticket).

D. Make the payment only in authorized payment centers. This can be the office of the company or a bank branch in partnership with the mutual fund. Make sure you get a copy of the payment receipt and the Order Ticket.

E. Ask the agent how you can monitor your funds. Some funds give you online access where you can track your portfolio while some funds just give you NAVPS updates which means you’ll have to compute it manually.

LATEST : PhilEquity’s Fund Manager : Mr. Wilson Sy Will Launch A New Book On August 1 | Think Philippines!

PHILEQUITY CORNER By Valentino Sy

The market has been very volatile in the last few weeks. The Greek drama has again taken center stage while the sudden and sharp drop of Chinese stocks has caused investor anxiety around the globe. In times like this, we believe it is apt to look back at past historical events and revisit basic investment strategies to guide one’s decision-making.

It is, thus, timely that we will soon launch a book entitled “Opportunity of a Lifetime” authored by our fund manager, Mr. Wilson Sy. The book will be launched on Aug. 1.

Navigating through bulls and bears

The book narrates how Philequity navigated through the various bull and bear markets over the past decade. It contains blow-by-blow accounts and detailed descriptions of actual events that moved the stock market. Aside from these, it recounts our insights and analysis as we explain how certain momentous events affected the stock market and other asset classes. More importantly, the book details actual calls and predictions that we made based on our analysis during those times.

10 chapters of investment knowledge

The book is organized into 10 different chapters, each describing a specific historical event or expounding on a specific investment theme. Passages and quotes from past Philequity Corner articles were carefully chosen to encapsulate various investment lessons. These are timeless investment strategies which have proven to be useful then and remain to be useful now. We, thus, believe the lessons contained in the book can be used as guideposts to navigate through present-day market conditions.

Reading through the rhymes

Mark Twain once said, “History does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme.” We believe this holds especially true for the events that affect the stock market. In the book “Opportunity of a Lifetime,” we show that historical events may be used as templates for analyzing present-day situations and as references for predicting future ones. More importantly, we explain that looking at historical patterns and rhymes may be used as basis for making sound investment decisions.

Creating your own opportunity of a lifetime

An example of this is how we used the Asian financial crisis as a template for understanding the 2008 US subprime mortgage crisis (The US can learn from the Asian Financial Crisis, Jan. 21, 2008; US credit crisis and bailouts – Reminiscent of 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, March 17, 2008). The research we did during those times formed the basis for our call that the bear market presented a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity (Opportunity of a Generation, Nov. 11, 2008). This also helped us accurately predict the bottom of the bear market and the start of the ongoing bull market (666 on 3-6-9, April 13, 2009).

We believe investors can follow a similar process when they look for opportunities in times of crisis and volatility. As Wilson himself said in the book’s preface, “Through this book, it is my fervent wish to impart my investment experiences to the common Pinoy – so they can have their own ‘Opportunity of a Lifetime.’”

Demystifying investing

We know it takes hard work to be successful at investing. One has to study different disciplines such as company fundamentals, global and local macroeconomics, politics, sociology and even psychology.  This is why we seek to demystify the investing process by explaining and sharing our framework through the Philequity Corner articles and the book we are launching. As Wilson said in the book’s preface, “Although the subject of investments can sometimes be daunting to investors, I was hoping readers would absorb my thoughts on the markets and improve their own financial know-how. I wanted people to gain insights on how to make proper asset class allocations and how to invest in equities and currencies.”

PhilEquity Fund,Inc.'s performance since inception last 1994! It grew by 3,700%!

PhilEquity Fund,Inc.’s performance since inception last 1994! It grew by 3,700%!

Empowering and educating the Filipino investor

Though professional investing is a highly-specialized field, we believe investing is something all Filipinos can learn and practice. And while we share our market calls and stock specific advice from time to time, our articles focus more on explaining the process we go through in order to come up with our investment calls and decisions. By doing this, we hope our readers would learn how to invest properly and would be confident in building-up their investment portfolios. As the old adage goes, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”

Investing is for everyone

In writing Philequity Corner articles and publishing them in The Philippine Star’s business section, we aim to make investing less cumbersome while also educating the general public. This goes with Philequity Fund’s mandate of providing an investment avenue for smaller investors so they can participate in the ongoing secular bull market in Philippine stocks. The book we will launch is a culmination of these efforts. As Mr. Washington Sycip stated in the book’s foreword, “The issue of financial literacy should also be disseminated among the widest possible members of society. This book addresses such an issue and can be used as a valuable reference tool for successful investing in the future.”

Book launch on Aug. 1

We invite our Philequity investors to attend our shareholders meeting, investors briefing and book launch on Aug. 1. The affair will start on 3 p.m., at the Meralco Theater in Ortigas, Pasig City. On that day, we will sell the books, at cost, to Philequity clients and investors. Since Wilson’s main advocacy is education, he has decided to donate all proceeds from book sales on the day of the launch, and in the future, to the Ateneo de Manila University and Xavier School educational trust funds.

UP CLOSE! On August 1 : PhilEquity Will Give Its Own State Of The Market Address (SOMA) | Think Philippines!

PHILEQUITY CORNER By Valentino Sy

On Aug. 1, Philequity will give its own SONA, but with a twist. It will be a State of the Market Address or SOMA. Through this SOMA, we will explain what happened to our stock market and where it will head to from here. In this article, we will give you a teaser of our market outlook which will be presented on Saturday, Aug. 1.

Philippine economic indicators

After reaching a high of 8,137 in April, the index fell sharply after disappointing 1Q15 GDP figures were released. Strong economic growth underpins the relatively high valuations of the PSEi, so below forecast numbers can lead to a correction. We will discuss Philippine economic indicators such as interest rates, inflation, GDP growth, OFW remittances, and how they affect the stock market.

Global macroeconomics

The Philippine economy will also be affected by what is happening in the global economy. Developments there will also affect our country and stock market. For instance, the sharp drop in crude oil prices has been a boon to consumers as it increased their spending power. In a previous article (see Falling Oil Prices: A Boon to the Philippine Economy, Jan. 26), we talked about the positive effects it would have on the economy. Thus, we cannot lose sight of other asset classes, such as global bond yields, crude oil and other commodities. We will also discuss the impact of major macro events in China and Greece as these have also led to sharp corrections.

PhilEquity Fund,Inc.'s performance since inception last 1994! It grew by 3,700%!

PhilEquity Fund,Inc.’s performance since inception last 1994! It grew by 3,700%!

The almighty US dollar

Although Philequity invests mainly in equities, we keep a close watch on currencies. Among the currencies, the most important at this point is the US dollar strength. This will have a significant impact on stock prices, currencies and businesses around the world. We will discuss how the dollar has been faring against the Euro, Japanese yen, emerging market currencies and how it has affected stocks.

The Philippine peso

On the back of the US dollar strength, the peso closed at 45.52 last Friday, a four-year low against the US dollar. We will share our views on where the Philippine peso is headed, as well as its performance against the Euro, yen and our regional neighbors.

Global stock markets

In addition to global macroeconomics, it is important to note the performance of stock markets around the world, especially the US. This will give us a heads up on how Philippine stocks will react, as well as confirm whether we are still in a global bull market or not.

Philippines stock market fundamentals and yearend target

In order to come up with price targets for the PSEi and individual stocks, we continue to study the fundamentals of different companies. We will give a broad view on this as we examine the PSEi’s valuation versus other stock markets and quarterly earnings reports. We will also give our yearend target, as well as risks & catalysts that can affect this.

Technical analysis

Aside from fundamentals, we also use technical analysis in determining the direction of the market. During the briefing, we will also provide our technical analysis viewpoint on the Philippine stock market, other equity indices and currencies.

Fund flows

While fundamentals tell you how cheap or expensive a stock is, it also pays to follow the money. We will describe how the flow of foreign funds have risen and ebbed during 2015, leading to sharp gyrations in the market. On the other hand, domestic fund flows remain strong, with local institutions continuing to buy on dips.

 From placements to buybacks

In previous articles (see An avalanche of overnight secondary placements, July 23,  2012 and A Torrent of Share Issuances and Placements, Nov. 11, 2013), we described how tens of billions of pesos worth of placements sapped liquidity from the market and caused it to correct. On Saturday, we will show you the reverse is now happening – companies, owners and majority shareholders are now buying. We will identify which stocks are being bought and who the buyers are.

Politics and stocks

With less than a year to go before national elections, broadsheets have been rife with speculation as to who the President will endorse, who is running for what position and under what party, and who the frontrunner in the surveys is. The choice of leader and stability of government can make or break a bull market, so we will show you what happens in other countries based on the results of their elections.

Using the Philequity book as a guide

During the event, we will also hold the book launch of “Opportunity of a Lifetime.” Books will be sold at cost on that day, with all proceeds going to charity. The book will give you a glimpse into how Philequity Corner was born, how the articles are crafted and how the investment strategies we use are formulated.

To help readers understand the book more, a chapter on how to read it has been included. It is our hope that clients and readers will be able to use the book as a guide in making investment decisions. If you buy books on that day, you will have the opportunity to have it signed by the author, Wilson Sy. We invite all Philequity investors to Philequity’s shareholders meeting, investors briefing and book launch on Aug. 1, 3 p.m. at the Meralco Theater.
