First of all, I would like to personally congratulate every single Filipino Thinker in the world for reaching our first solid 101,650th level visitor base. It means a lot to us especially we are not funded by any institution and we are just bootstrapping to give our fellow netizens an alternative insights material to Wealth Management and Current Events in the Philippines.

Moving forward, I would like to share my Top 3 reasons why I will not vote for Grace Poe as President nor Vice President. This is a political editorial and I am not claiming a monopoly of the truth and opinions in the Philippine political scene. Hope you’ll like this.
#1 – If not for her last name, she is literally a nobody even if you add up her MTRCB stint. Ironically, she keeps on saying that she will continue the unfinished legacy of his Father but let us take a look on that statement carefully. What are the unfinished political legacy of FPJ to begin with? Does she really need a political power for it? Does she really need the Presidency for it?

I will leave that question unanswered for everyone to figure out based on their personal understanding on that very vague statement. Because if I will be asked today, I see FPJ as a legendary actor and not a proven and tested statesman nor a policy maker.
#2 She pledged an allegiance to the American Flag and became an American citizen. We may end up electing “again” an American politician and this time for the highest political seat in the country. Question in my mind now, do we have a shortage of competent Filipino statesman? ( Insert : I will never vote for someone who sees the citizenship as a tool of convenience and more over, I will never vote for a candidate who aspire to lead our country yet left us at one point in her life. )
I cannot help but compare her citizenship issue with Dick Gordon’s father. The father of Dick Gordon was born as an American and died as a Filipino while you have a newly elected senator dreaming to be a President whereas she was born as a Filipino but migrated to America and now unfortunately is facing an allegation that she doesn’t even meet the basic and simple rule of residency requirement in the Philippines as a Senator. How ironic and disappointing.

#3 She is inexperienced. We cannot afford another On-The-Job trainee President. Look, being a President of the Philippines is not an easy job. We are facing a lot of problems internally and externally — from communist insurgency, OFW employment conditions, Economic policies, West Philippine Sea dilemma with China, Illegal Drugs, Corruption in the public and private sector to name a few. How can Grace Poe handle it all when she hasn’t even finished a full, single term in all of her political adventurism.

Take note, Senator Grace Poe only served the MTRCB office for 2 years then she resigned to prep up for her Senatorial bid. Right now, she has yet to finish her first term as a Senator/Lawmaker but AGAIN, she is planning to bid for the VP or Presidency. ( Insert : Where is the proven track record? )

Why is she rushing to bid for the Presidency? Mind you Filipino Thinkers, an average joe may not fully understand this but running a 1,000 employee corporation is no easy task what more leading the 100,000,000 Filipino people. (Insert : is there a shortage of a proven Filipino statesman? )
OK, I guess most of the Grace Poe apologist will defend her with the following lines : “Yes, walang track record and experience sa pulitika. Wala rin experience magnakaw.” — That’s a B*S*!

Are we going to lower our standards because of the issue of morality? So, it is okay to gamble the welfare of the 100,000,000 Filipino people for a woman with no political experience just because we are traumatized by corrupt officials?
The problem of the electoral system in the Philippines is truly a complex one but that should not be a reason for us to lower our standards and go for “Pwede na!” from a “Pwedeng-pwede ito!”( Insert : Meritocracy ).

in regards to this comment, yung idea po of translating the article can relay to every filipino, majority of the voters comes from the lower side of life, which is hirap sa english, its a very helpful idea, para maka relate po yung iba, and more deeper aware ang mamayan sa issue ng politika, which matters most sa ekonomiya ng bansa,

Precisely! I mean compared to others, PNoy is ‘not that corrupt’ (im not saying he’s all clean but his one of the lesser evils) and people voted for him because of the hope that integrity will bring our economy back on track. But the problem with investing too much on personality standards, we forget to look at the educational background or governing history of a person. What is his strategy re: SAF44? China? Currency? Where is the justice in the mindanao massacre? FOI bill? Divorce bill? Pork barrel? and so much more! These arent answerable by “puso” and “tuwid na daan” alone. I hope everyone will also consider the history in governance, politics, and legislation of a person esp if that person will run in the highest office of our country. Our country has out of track for a very long time. We cant afford more delays. Think Philippines, i beg you.

In my opinion if you compare aquino to past presidents except for marcos, he has done a lot more than the past presidents for the past 30 years since edsa. But if you were to base it on his promises he falls short to the tuwid na daan. To bring up the status of the philippnes from below 100 in the perception of the most corrupt nations to the present rank of number 85 is an achievement which is why we have more investors coming to the Philippines. Why blame the president for everything that is wrong on the Philippines? The truth is the from the lowest aspect of the goverment which is the barangay you already have corruption. How many politicians do you see who are thinking of the welfare of the people before their own pockets? I think if we want our country to improve it has to start at the grassroots. If the barangays have project that help in the livelihood, then it will be the building block of development of even the poorest.

If you are waiting for the president to solve everything then you are looking for a miracle. If we lose our homes during a storm is it the presidents fault? Most filipinos are just waiting for dole outs. What has he done on his own that would help. We have to help in our own way. We are a nation and a nation should not be dependent on just one person, the president.

That’s why it’s important to elect a president who will continue what PNoy has started and among the three declared candidates, it’s Mar Roxas who can and will do it. Not the corrupt Binay nor Grace Poe who will be indebted to the trapos (principally NPC and NUP [formerly Lakas of Gloria Arroyo]) supporting her. Let’s face it , although she says that she is independent, she will rely on the machinery of these politicians. She cannot mount a campaign without a political machinery.

There are 2 political scenarios that you have to consider here: 1) during Cory’s time, there was the URGENCY to get out of dictatorship so cries for freedom was great, unmindful of how to run the country’s economy, as long as somebody can save the sinking Phil. at that time. 2) during this time, there is no more that urgency, but what we need now is CONTINUANCE of progress, our freedom and CHECK & BALANCE in every aspect of governance.

I thought Fidel Ramos was able to restructure the Philippine economy after Cory? My brother was telling me when I first came back home after a long absence from the Philippines that he started opening up when Asia was experiencing an economic surge during his term in office. Then the people suddenly experienced a sudden brainfart and decided to put Erap in Malacanang. How come I’m not reading anything about the Ramos period? Do people even remember he became your president once upon a time?

What did Ramos do? He travelled all over the world. Thats what he did. He is the only Filipino president who was out of the country with the highest mileage. The Philippines didnt show any improvement under his term.

Grace Poe may not be the best person there is to lead the Philippines, but among the presidential wannabees who are making the top of the survey, I am willing to gamble on her and hope that she has the political will to bring the Philippines to a better ground. She’s a far better alternative than her nearest rival who might have all the experience in the world but doesn’t want to face the issues thrown to him squarely and who is hiding in the cloak of political immunity.
If there are better alternative than Grace aside from those trapos, why should we not vote for them? The problem is there’s no one, at least until now.

Exactly my thoughts. At pinapasunod nya ang tao sa pamamagitan ng kamay na bakal. Tinatakot. Pinapatay. May mga batas tayo na dapat sundin at igalang. I think what we need to realize is hindi naman kelangan na matakot ka sa otoridad o sa batas. What we need to learn is how to respect the law. Yun lang, respetuhin ang batas. If we all learn this, then we will be so much better.

Ang mga kriminal lang naman ang takot kay Duterte eh. At sa aming mga taga Davao, mas mainam na ang ganito. Kung walang kamay na baka, sa tingin mo, magiging ganito ang Davao? Pnoy was not a top performing congressman and senator
but is doing great in cleaning up the mess in government now.
Former sen. juan flavior was a great DOH secretary during his time
but not so as a senator.

gamble means not sure but if you like difference to a better Philippines why you’re not Try Mayor Rodrigo in Davao is the very competent even the Asia CEO Forum interview is asking Duterte to Run because he is the only person in this time to make a better Philippines and he is the only brave person to fight criminal and to make Davao the 9th safest City in the World by implementing 911 security with CCTV 24/7 camera. Even Ben Tulfo news’5 question to others why only Duterte talking about drugs and base on statistics 92% in the city of NCR Metro Manila are already attacking the area of drugs. And Duterte in his statistics 3Million+ people are experienced taking the prohibited drugs like SHABU. If we cant control the drug sendicates here in the Philippines the number of crimen will steal increasing and once again only Duterte to fight to all different types of criminals.

Duterte is most qualified for the job, the problem is, he is still undecided.For now, still premature to judge the possible candidates because we still need to hear their platforms of governance. In the article, you shared, I agree, Grace Poe is inexpereince, however, she is more humane done Binay who’s experience in politics pave the way for him to loot billions of pesos from the coffers of Makati and the office of the VP, hence, its better to select the former than the latter if today will be the election and no other alternate candidate choose with. My opinion, public office is a public trust,therefore, primary qualification is the honesty and sincerity of the leader. not the pretentious, evil, corrupt, experience ones. I am not for Grace Poe, I am for Duterte but if their is no other candidate, the poor will try and select the Senator because of her surnames popularity over Binay. For Roxas, still 50-50 because of Pnoy bad performance. Thanks.

I did not vote for Pnoy but to be fair with him, he has governed the nation pretty well, except for some blunders on blame-game, mamasapano, credit grabbing, etc.
I just hope if Mar will be elected, he will not copy what Pnoy is doing, put the blame on all bad things to his predecessors and keep all the glory for himself. I still believe that it is more statesmanly to give the honor to whom it is due.

I like Duterte to be the next president. I want to prevent Binay from being elected president. Two Reasons:
1. They believe that being elected/re-elected means being absolved of their previous administrative/corruption cases. That is their argument why cases vs Junjun Binay should be dropped. This is a dangerous doctrine. The Supreme court should review this doctrine now.
2. They believed they made Makati. By so doing, they thought they own Makati. Truth is, Makati is made by P.D.426, Section 9(A-6) promulgated March 30, 1974.
It provides in part that 60% of manufactured goods are taxable in the city/mun. where the manufacturers’ principal offices are located, (mostly in Makati), while 40% shall be taxable in the site of the factory.
If my husband Doc Islu were a congressman, he will push for the amendment of that provision of law to state that the manufactured good sales tax should be paid in the city/mun, where the factory is located, for good reasons. Such funds should be used to mitigate environmental degradation, local health hazards, and social dislocation caused by the establishment of the factory. Makati splurged on these resources. What about city hall III, Science High II, etc.?

We noted your opinion about Ms. Grace Poe… thats’ your opinion. My opinion is to vote for her if she will accept the challenge to “lead the country” as President. If she wins, she has a lot of things to do and problems to solve for us Filipinos, but these are my commitment to my country once she will be our President:
1. To observe fully the traffic rules and regulations;
2. To care and value each and every countrymen of mine;
3. To improve my tax payment 20% every year thereafter;
4. To reduce my household lither by 10% ever year thereafter;
5. To be more loyal to my employer by way of reducing my tardinees and absentism by 10% every year thereafter;
6. I will reduce the wasted of food that i take particularly “Rice” every opportunity that comes;
7. I will ensure that i will not be a burden to other people;
8. I will try my hardest to live within my means;
9. I will love my country the Philippines more than i do now by way of preserving its natural resources and environment.

11. I will prioritize to buy products that are “Philippine Made”.
12. I will reduce my appetite for entertainment, and increase my appetite for work and be more productive.

We all have the resources needed to improve. We have a lot of brilliant people. Our government had been led by qualified and competent people before. The real issue actually is corruption. The culture of corruption has penetrated the top layer down to the barangay level. It has shadowed the minds of the presidents down to the SK officials.
I think the key is not to look for the most competent or the most experienced but for the one who we can entrust trillions of our resources and who has the heart and commitment to alleviate us from poverty. Anyway, the president has a powerful resources at his/her hand and he/she can hire the best people to help running the government.

This will be a grim reminder to those who capitalized on the citizenship and residency issues being raised against Sen. Grace Poe. Comelec allowed Sen. Grace Poe to run and won as senator in 2013. If there was somebody who could have stopped her candidacy in 2013, it should be the Comelec who did not find any irregularity in her citizenship and residency requirements in 2013. Now because the feisty Iron Lady in Grace Poe is perceived to be slowly but surely eyeing the presidency in 2016, the disinformation campaign against her will increase exponentially since the trapos and dynastic political family of shame cannot accept that a foundling whom they try to discredit as not a Filipino citizen and have not stayed for long to establish her permanent residency in the Phil. one day will become the president of this benighted land of ours. It will be the foundlings, the maligned and taken for granted OFW’S nd the diaspora of Filipinos who left their beloved country and became citizens of the world but left their hearts not in San Francisco but in Manila who will one day raise up their powerful voices and rally to the cause of Grace Poe when she ultimately claim the presidency as a destiny that indeed a foundling can also be a worthy president of the Phil. The doomsayers and detractors of Grace Poe can do all their scheming black propaganda to the fore but the more discerning and intelligent voters will gravitate to a feisty Iron Lady who have balls compared to the retinue of striving men’s club members around and this amazing Grace can confidently say to them , “Isang boto ka lang?”.

Clicked a link and wound up here. Interesting. I’m just a weekend history buff nowadays, but there was a time when I had believed that Cory would open the door to a more equitable society. No such luck.
To my mind, the Executive branch is just 1 of the under- performing arms of government and, in fairness, there is only so much that it can accomplish by itself. Check & balance. The Executive must work with the other branches of our system which, in their turn, should be held to a decent standard (and standards of decency). It is easy to talk about meritocracy until one factors in the relative inaccessibility of higher education for the majority of Filipinos. Power is securely in the hands of an entrenched handful of families. New blood may not always seek to service the disenfranchised. Things are bad & no quick solutions are in sight. Question: Is our system right for us? There may be an advantage to a parliamentary system– relative to our present democracy, that is. Maybe we’ll have a more balanced representation in our Legislature. Maybe, maybe. With better citizen education, we’ll know for sure.

Reason 1 and 3 are good. Citizen vs. non-citizen is actually for me not a qualification because Pusong Pinoy is what is actually the true qualification. Binay may be true to color, blood and birth soil. But he would be disqualified if based on Pusong Pinoy because he has no heart for his fellow Filipino countrymen. I would not waste my time on hypothetical candidates or possible but improbable candidates like Gibo before. For me the most important hurdle in this 2015 election is to ensure the vote is solid against the possibility of entrenchment of corruption. An additional divisor in the political arena, is sure to catapult Binay to the presidency. In a game of chess, there is no other peril to the King/republic worse than that. If Mar had thrown his hat in the political arena, there should be no more additional candidate. If he had not, there we can still afford to do the calisthenics of who is right, or most effective or what. I don’t know why for the second time, even without Binay now, Escudero is still against Mar. But I cannot afford the intramurals that make us forget that we must stop Binay foremost. Above anything else, Binay must be stopped. There is only one move now. Forward with Mar.

LP is desperate to win the 2016 elections. They are trying to trim down the competition by making, the formidable, Sen. Grace Poe Roxas’ running mate. And, apparently, they started courting also Batangas Gov. Vilma Santo-Recto for the sake of topping the poll. According to the article, they are hoping to boost Mar’s chance of winning in 2016 elections, in case Sen. Grace Poe declines the offer, by using the ‘multi-awardedness’ of Gov. Vilma in Philippine television industry.
Is this how Roxas badly want to win the 2016 presidency? He is focused on vote gathering rather than capability to govern in search for his running mate? Pathetic LP. This just shows how great Sen. Grace Poe is. The presidential candidates for 2016 are meticulously preparing as early as now while, Sen. Grace Poe is busy working.
Do you want to win a president that desperately wants to be elected as president?

Hi OP, are you sure that you fully understand the relevant residency requirements that you are disputing here? Maybe you can elaborate on your understanding of the dynamics of Philippines jurisprudence and the Constitution with regard to said residency requirements?
It’s ok to say that you don’t now much about the topic. It’s better to admit ignorance than to continue holding half-baked opinions.
Concepts to consider: residency, domicile, animus manendi and/or revertendi, RA 9225 as applied to said issue.

Lets not compare ourselves with Singapore. It’s a landmass smaller than Clark, Pampanga. Population is less than half of Metro Manila. Their government is DICTATORIAL hiding in the skirt of democracy. For 50yrs it is ruled by 1 political party. Successful corporations owned by 1 family. And if you think they have equality, ask the Indians and the Malays (Muslims) who are citizens of Singapore what is the highest position in government they can achieve? (Don’t count their President as that position is POWERLESS!!!)

I have read the author’s opinion on the subject at hand and I also read with interest the different comments of everyone. As a Filipino voter, we are given the right to choose our candidates and as a rule there are qualification standards to follow or subscribe to. However as a Filipino voter we did not take into consideration our responsibility as a citizen. We expect to much from our leaders but lest we forget, we have to look into the mirror to see and ask ourselves this question, ‘WHAT HAVE I DONE FOR OUR COUNTRY AND HAVE I CONTRIBUTED SOMETHING TO MAKE IT BETTER AND RESPECTED BY OTHER NATIONALITIES?” We cannot put all the blame to our government because we as a people need to share in the burden of governance and strictly adhere to the rule of law. One classic example is; as motorists and pedestrians, do we religiously follow the traffic rules and regulations or only if there are law enforcers in the road? If individually we can answer with a straight face that we do, then we have contributed something that would minimally prevent chaos in the road. Otherwise cheating in subscribing to rules and regulations is a form of corruption that what most us would not want from a leader. He or she “who is beyond reproach and nary a dirt in his or her name” deserve our trust and confidence because with his or her capability to govern, this country will be great again.

Everyday I see articles urging people not to vote for this and that candidate and it confuses me more and more. After reading all these articles from different sources, I could only think of voting for — no one; which would later on in the voting booth lead me back to the very dangerous impulse of voting for the first name that comes to mind. Remember the “Erap” jokes? Well, he won.
For a change I would like to see a list of candidates ranked good, better and best. And keep printing it so people can see the names even when they have their eyes closed.

Could have been a better blog if u have mentioned all the good and bad sides of all potential candidates rather than specifically picking up the inexperienced one. As a filipino working abroad, what i’ve learned from my foreign co-workers – if u dont believe in the recommendations u better cite all the disadvantages and advantages of all the present available choices. And suggest what u believe a good solution to the problem instead of just simply criticizing without adding value to it. This is what i always see on us Filipinos…we love to criticize but we dont give concrete suggestions to the address our problems…

I used to believe that GP can be a good alternative to our traditional politicians until I experienced her unprofessionalism. I, along with my colleagues, scheduled an interview with GP in her office for a class requirement. While we understand that every minute counts in a Senator’s life and though we are willing to wait for her, I cannot just accept the fact she allowed us to wait for hours because she needed her yosi break. Since then, I became skeptic towards her. While I am advocate of women’s leadership, I will not vouch for GP plainly because she is a woman and she has no track record of corruption. I won’t vote for her because she clearly has no track record, not to mention, her lack of experience from holding leadership positions aside from her short-lived stint in MTRCB. Obviously she uses her father to gain public support and she’s just too bright to leverage her status being a foundling — public sympathy at its worse. I won’t vote for her because she is not a Filipino citizen and that she swore her allegiance to the US. I won’t vote for her because she is too selfish, and her self-pride pushes her to rush, to hunger and thirst for higher position. I am not voting for GP neither I am voting for Mar and Binay. I hope Filipino voters will choose their leaders wisely. I would rather go for Duterte than to waste my vote for these self-motivated politicians.

GP seemingly, is just too proud and confident, to rush herself to this level of position, because she carries the popular name of FPJ. I believe she is not ready for it. In addition to her questionable allegiance and status on citizenship, she is not that experienced .. she will just be a white elephant, and potential to be used by crooked politicians..

I think she is not ready for presidency because, when she was interviewed regarding the inc and Sec. Delima, she responded like she would rather ask Sec Delima to explain than to leave it to the justice system.
For sure because of the block voting of inc. But when it comes to the truth, we are all should be defender of the truth at all cost. If you could not stand for the truth or if you deny the truth at any given time then you are still a baby. Wait until you grown up for presidency.

*A New accidental popular president appointed by the filipino AGAIN…
*If grace POE Won the election without or insufficient knowledge or plans for our country and its territory then its just like the same as NOINOI Administration have.
Anyway here’s my opinion to all the presidentiables
If POE WON she will maintain this economic as the same until her term ends
If DUTERTE WON we will have a strong MILITARY FORCE a Strong Government (More Death Penalty, Organized Country).
If BINAY WON the Business industry will grow to its maximum potentials and the job in the country will generate or increase its resources as the same in corruption. Corruption will also rise.. there will be no changes in oil industry and in electricity.
If MARCOS WON He will restore his Father’s name and also for the restoration of The Republic of the Philippines based on its real master plan, the Nuclear Power Plant will be awaken. the economic will rise the filipino people will embrace its glory. military force will also increase for the defense of the country.
this is only my opinion hope we all be wise to elect our new leader not because his/her popularity nor his/her family background but in its team work, integrity, excellence.

For me, this are the choices too choose from..
1. Binay – corrupt; thus this will help the Filipinos???
2. Mar – incompetent, no leadeship skills, character/attitude issues; will cause more problems for Filipinos!
3. Poe – a rookie ( everyone begins as a rookie) i will not call her inexperience, because is not fair. We have our own experiences. Citizenship; is not an issue anymore.. Why now!??? A potential leader for me. There is hope for Filipinos
If Marcos run; most probably same a Poe it will only differ on their plattform and sincerity. So which is a better choice???

There is an alternative. Duterte has been the leader of Davao for like almost 30yrs. now. All my friends and my friends’ friends from Davao love him. For them, he is a true leader.

inaldo share the same sentiment. When Grace Poe announced her candidacy , she used her father’s name, her father’s legacy . I thought , “Is she riding her father’s coat tail?” Is she not confident enough to use her own name Llamanzares? Can she not stand on her own merits? She wanted to continue her father’s legacy. Did her father document his dreams and aspirations?. Did he publish any op-Ed ? Did he publish any papers where we can cross-reference Grace’s statement ?
At one point in her life she denounced her Pilipino citizenship because she believed that America could provide her better opportunities, better life than her motherland. She saw an opportunity and grabbed it. Now , she saw another opportunity to be president of the Philippines that she needed to junk her American citizenship and for another time reclaimed her Pilipino citizenship . Again , she is exploiting this opportunity. I know the term for this kind of behavior. Do you?

Very strong and valid points. But my problem with this article is the author doesn’t suggest his alternative and maybe point for point give indicate why this alternative is better.
Agreed: “Yes, walang track record and experience sa pulitika. Wala rin experience magnakaw.” is not a solid indicator of good leadership. But leaving the opinion at this leaves the opposite argument open for consideration. In other words are you saying never mind corruption for as long the person is extremely intelligent, experienced and in your standards, qualified?
It is not enough that you give your reasons for NOT. But give an alternative. Otherwise you indirectly suggest to vote for anyone else, (corrupt, self-interest serving) candidates. I liken this article to people on the streets who keep on complaining but offer no alternative solutions.

Well, everyone is free to vote for his choice. Just a reaction to the three point reasons advanced by the writer.
1. Who was Roxas if not for his grandfather’s name. Do you think he will be as known today if it were not for his ancestors? How about Binay? If not for Cory, Binay is a political unknown. Even with the Mabini lawyers before, his name was nowhere near the most popular. Both these men did not just come into the political limelight without banking on someone’s name (Roxas) and someone popular (Cory). Why pick on Grace when these two are just as guilty as Grace.
2. She married an American citizen and would have stayed there for good. Circumstances in life change and so are our choices. Roxas studied and worked in the US and would have stayed there also had not his brother congressman not die. He had to come back to continue the political name.
3. Experience? Come on. No president knows everything. It is in whom we choose to run specific departments. If we put the right people in the right departments, then, a president’s job would be less difficult. If Grace chooses technocrats rather than politicians to be in her cabinet, then, we will be fine. That is why the qualifications for being president is set at the minimum but we do require stringent qualifications for let’s say SC justice. A laborer who champions the cause of his class can become president even if he is only a high school graduate. If experience is the only reason, then, Roxas should not be voted upon. 5 years in an executive position and found wanting. Just look at the long lines of MRT. It was Roxas who removed Sumitomo. Need I say more about Tacloban and Leyte? About Mamasapano? He was a clueless leader of the department in charge of the police. Do we need this kind of experience? Even his own boss (Pnoy) did not trust him enough to inform him about what is going on in his own turf (DILG).
